Fire Protection Engineering Specialist

Provide life safety systems engineering support through review, research, analysis, design, communication, coordination, and field observation activities. Support the process and documentation for state plan releases, requests for variance, and certificates of occupancy. Provide assistance to ensure project scope is executed successfully and in accordance with owner’s performance requirements and applicable codes and standards. Work with project managers for resolution of engineering issues on projects. Review and comment on engineering work of outside architectural/engineering firms. Work with all members of the project team through planning, design, construction, and warranty. Provide facilities engineering support to operations and maintenance staff and other departments upon request. Work with Environmental Health and Public Safety (EHPS) staff to ensure aligned strategy for fire and life safety systems design, maintenance, and repair and rehabilitation (R&R). Serve as R&R component champion for fire and life safety systems including: fire protection, fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fire pumps, emergency communications and egress. Assist with development and upkeep of University design standards.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering; fire protection emphasis desired  
  • Minimum four years of experience in fire and building life safety systems 
  • Experience with design of fire protection, fire sprinklers, fire alarm systems, fire pumps, smoke evacuation, and emergency communications and egress systems 
  • Experience with interpretation and application of national and state fire, life safety, and building codes 
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety system engineering concepts, principles, and practices, including fire suppression and detection technology 
  • A valid US or Canadian drivers' license


  • Associate or professional Member status in the International Society of Fire Protection Engineers 
  • Professional engineer registration
