Utilities Engineering Specialist, Associate #16929

The successful Utilities Engineering Specialist, Associate is a technical resource for the generation and distribution of utilities from a central plant to campus buildings. Provide engineering judgment and recommendations on mechanical and controls engineering issues to support Wade Utility Plant and Utilities Distribution. Create, update, and maintain engineering drawings and documents. Develop utility projects including justification and scope creation. Assist with material take-offs and cost estimating for future projects. Provide oversight for in-house utilities design and project work including construction, startup, and commissioning. Provide project engineering support through design review, communication of design standards, and assistance with construction issue resolution. Provide technical troubleshooting support as well as planning and coordination of operations, maintenance, replacement, and expansion of utilities systems. Serve as an individual contributor for developing, maintaining, and communicating chilled water, steam, and potable water distribution design standards for Utilities Operations.  

Required: 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology with a mechanical or controls emphasis 
  • Experience in utilities generation and/or distribution, helpful
  • Additional experience with: 
    • Document control and drawing management
    • Developing cost estimates
    • Planning project work
    • Preparing NPV analysis 
    • Working for a utility company 
    • Designing, sizing, troubleshooting, and commissioning industrial equipment (e.g., boilers, turbines, pumps, fans, piping systems, PLCs, DCS, SCADA)
    • Conducting root cause analysis 
    • ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, and equipment arrangement drawings 
  • Ability to produce project justifications
  • Good organizational, verbal, and written communication skills 
  • Interpersonal skills for collaborative work with customers, clients, and other entities and organizations
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet critical deadlines 
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and enter confined spaces
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and hazardous areas around machinery, chemicals, etc. in utilities plants and utility distribution infrastructure
