See the beautiful work of Sylvia Gray and meet the artist!
“My work as a painter and surface designer is an exploration of shapes, color, and emotion, inspired by my experiences.” Sylvia Gray sees patterns in landscapes and the motion of figures, and she uses those patterns to dye and paint on silk. Gray’s wearable artwork can include traditional shibori silk dyeing or silkscreens that she develops and then uses to paint on her fabric in layers. Sylvia will also hand-paint abstract and representational images on silk with dye to capture her emotional response. “Patterns are everywhere in my life. They are like magical mysteries waiting to be solved.” Gray notes a particular inspiration from the German Expressionists, Blue Rider Artists, and Wolf Kahn and shares animals, family, and a love of art history as major influencers of her work. “One of my children, Sean, is autistic and found tremendous release in making art. This inspired me to begin taking classes, leading me on a journey to the professional working artist I am today.” Sylvia Gray is an Indiana native who currently lives in the countryside near Indianapolis with her husband. She is a member of Indiana Artisan, the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, Silk Painters International, and the Hoosier Salon.
